Golden Mountain, Tulca, Galway

Curated by Valerie Connor

As part of Tulca in 2013, Colin Martin exhibited two works- 'Basic Space 1' and 'The Pier'. The Pier is based on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s essay, ‘Observations On The Long Take’, a reflection on the cut in film and its relationship to meaning. A scene will have a different meaning depending on when it is cut. Narrative details may be revealed later that have significance to earlier occurrences. He compares the edit to death. In 'The Pier' a dolly-mounted camera begins on 150 feet of track. On a number of screens the same image is displayed and synchronised: the camera tracks slowly forward, the first screen cuts and returns to the beginning of the sequence, other screens do this at different intervals, each screen begins to loop and repeat, the last screen shows the full uninterrupted 7 min sequence.
